Considered to be among William Merritt Chase's best
students, Julian Onderdonk, painted his beloved Texas landscape
earning the sobriquet "The Bluebonnet Painter"
Onderdonk was also known as "The Father of Texas Paintings".
Born in San Antonio he was the son of a professional artist. Naturally
his first teacher was his father, eventually like his father
he studied at the Art Students League with Kenyon Cox.

He went on to study at the Shinnecock Summer School in
Southampton, Long Island with Chase. Like the French Impressionists
William Merritt Chase advocated painting en plein air something that suited
Onderdonk's style.

Onderdonk was hired to assist in organizing art exhibitions for the Texas State Fair. This
brought him back to Texas and eventually he settled in his home town.

His life was short, he died unexpectedly at age 40 following surgery for a stomach ailment.
The Dallas Museum of Art is the first stop on a three city Texas tour of an exhibition
exploring Julian Onderdonk's career.
