Part of but independent from the University of London, the College known as the Courtauld Institute
was founded in 1932 to study the history and conservation of art and architecture. The Gallery, open
to the public, features some of the incredible Impressionist and Post Impressionist works
that Samuel Courtauld (1876-1947) amassed and donated to the Institute.

Courtauld was an English industrialist part of a family textile business, that developed rayon, a popular
synthetic silk product. He purchased works by van Gogh, Manet, and Renoir among others. He made gifts
during his lifetime and bequeathed his remaining collection to the Courtauld.
