Samuel Courtauld, Viscount Lee of Fareham and Sir Robert Witt provided the inspiration for one of the finest art collections in England: The Courtauld Gallery.

Home to one of Edouard Manet's best-loved paintings, A Bar at the Folies-Bergère the Gallery is part of the Courtauld Institute.

Part of but independent from the University of London, the College known as the Courtauld Institute was founded in 1932 to study the history and conservation of art and architecture. The Gallery, open to the public, features some of the incredible Impressionist and Post Impressionist works that Samuel Courtauld (1876-1947) amassed and donated to the Institute.

Courtauld was an English industrialist part of a family textile business, that developed rayon, a popular synthetic silk product. He purchased works by van Gogh, Manet, and Renoir among others. He made gifts during his lifetime and bequeathed his remaining collection to the Courtauld.

The Gallery hosts temporary exhibitions such as Renoir at the Theatre, which features La Loge, a Renoir, Samuel Courtauld purchased for £22,600 in 1925.
