It's been nearly half a century since Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was honored with a comprehensive exhibition in Sweden.

Toulouse-Lautrec and Montmartre, Paris of the late 19th Century go together. His posters, drawings and oil paintings capture the move of this lively time as the art world underwent significant changes.

It was the time of the Impressionists, Post-Impressionists: Monet, Degas, Renoir, Vincent van Gogh and the emerging avant garde world of Pablo Picasso.

During the closing years of the 19th Century he spent nearly every night at the nightclub drawing what he saw in his ever present sketchbook.

Toulouse-Lautrec was one of the first to truly achieve overnight success. The entertainment industry realized it required marketing and without the mass media advantages of today they used posters. The majority of Toulouse-Lautrec's posters were created to advertise and are an integral part of this exhibition.

He was born to a wealthy aristocratic French family and yet he did focus on some of the seedier aspects of Parisian bohemian neighborhoods.

The Nationalmuseum poses an intriguing question in this exhibit: what would Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec make of present day Stockholm. The museum invited students from University College of Arts, Crafts and Design to answer this question through their own works of art in a complimentary exhibit called To use Lautrec.
