Joachim Patenier, Henri Blès, Robert Campin, Jacques Du Broeucq, and Hugo d'Oignies all hailed from
the southern area of Belgium known as Wallonia. Their artistic endeavors are celebrated in
A Curious Land. Wallonia an exhibition currently on display at the

Henri Blès was known for his landscapes. Lambert van Noort was an architect as well as a painter often
depicting religious subjects.

Saint Jerome spent four years in the Syrian desert to purify his soul. He was tormented by
vivid hallucinations during this time. He removed a thorn from the paw of a suffering lion, earning him
a lifelong companion. Often the lion is included in works honoring St. Jerome such as here.
