Frans Floris

Frans Floris was in Rome in 1541 and saw Michelangelo's Last Judgment, after it's unveiling. It impacted his future work, he is best known for his large sized religious and mythological works. He studied in Antwerp with Lambert Lombard. Floris taught most of the up and coming Flemish artists of Antwerp but died in debt, largely thanks to his notoriously extravagant lifestyle. He hailed from the Floris family of artists, of which he and his brother Cornelis found the most success. Cornelius was also an architect, who designed Antwerp's Town Hall.

Pieter Brueghel the Elder Called Floris "The Incomparable". Arithmetic, was one of seven important works originally it was believed to be the only surviving one; four others have subsequently been found. The four individuals are clad in Roman attire, an acknowledgment of the heavy influence of the Italian masters on Floris' work.

Sebastiano Ricci

Venetian Baroque era painter Sebastiano Ricci at times allowed his turbulent private life to dominate his artistic talents. He earned commissions in Paris and London as well as Venice. He worked extensively in Bologna on behalf of Pope Innocent XII.

How often does an Anthony van Dyck come on the market?

The Flemish master was noted for his religious pieces such as Saint Sebastian Bound for Martyrdom

Sebastian was a Captain in the third-century Roman army who was persecuted after his conversion to Christianity. The Emperor Diocletian ordered the martyr's own company to execute him after Sebastian refused to renounce his new faith. Shot by arrows, he didn't die, instead St. Irene nursed him back to health. Later he was beheaded for keeping his beliefs, and his body dumped in the main sewer of Rome, Cloaca Maxima. The story was a popular subject for Italian artists. Van Dyck studied in Italy.

Raffaellino del Garbo

Early Renaissance Florentine painter Raffaellino del Garbo studied under Filippino Lippi. His real name was Raffaellino Capponi. Del Gardo was a nickname given to him for the gracefulness (garbo) of his paintings. It is his religious themed works, often featuring the Madonna, for which he earned the greatest respect.

Abraham Mignon

The Dutch Baroque painter Abraham Mignon's favored subjects were flowers, fruit, birds and other still-life images and occasionally he painted portraits

He liked to set colorful flowers such as red roses in the foreground against a dark, usually black, background.

Fabergé designs and the Russian Royal Family are forever intertwined with the continued popularity of the Russian designer's eggs for the Tsars.

The Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna, sister of Tsar Nicholas II and her husband Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovch purchased this Fabergé bell push on December 2, 1902 at a cost of 280 robles.

A Chous decorated in red-figure, with a limited use of white, is one of the older pieces expected at TEFAF.

The scene shows a bearded banqueter lounging on a couch from his pose it suggests he is a bit the worse for imbibing.

Contemporary Art

Bill Viola

TEFAF doesn't overlook contemporary art signified with the inclusion of American video artist Bill Viola. He has been a pioneer in this genre for over 35 years working in such mediums as videotape, architectural video installations, sound environments, and flat panel video pieces.

The love story of Tristan and Isolde encapsulated in Wagner's 19th century opera was the subject of a collaboration between the video installation artist Bill Viola, Esa-Pekka Salonen, conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Kira Perov, executive director of the Bill Viola Studio called Love/Death: The Tristan Project.

Viola added an impressive collection of images, meant to be projected throughout the Wagner performance, accompanying the stage activities.

Hans Richter

Hans Richter was one of the earliest Dada Artists. Began in Switzerland, Dada ridiculed current contemporary culture both in art and literature.

For Richter, artists needed to be politically active, oppose war and support revolution. He wrote a first-hand account of the Dada and Neo-Dada movements in Dada: Art and Anti-Art.
