Claude Monet and Salvador Dali and everyone in between is an intriguing draw for a museum. The Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) owes a great debt of gratitude to Leonard C. Hanna, Jr. His impressive art collection formed the basis of the CMA's fabulous selection of later 19th Century and early 20th Century Art. This was the time of Picasso, Van Gogh and the Impressionists.

Hanna possessed excellent taste when it came to art. He liked a variety of works but the cachet of his collection was each piece must be 'good'.

The CMA has generously lent a selection of these works for an exhibition Monet to Dali: Impressionist and Modern Masterworks from the Cleveland Museum of Art. Currently at the Frist in Nashville, Tennessee it will later travel to the Vancouver Art Museum before having a viewing at home at the CMA. More about the exhibition in a feature article here. With an impressive draw such as this a catalog providing additional information and fabulous images is a must!

Each art work contains it's own text providing intriguing insight into the works such as Claude Monet's La capeline rouge, portrait de Madame Monet.

Winter was not a time the Impressionists put down their palattes. Painting outside was their forte focusing on the use of color in nature. Snow had a wonderful effect on color. For this image, Monet's wife, Camille, is outside as her husband captures her from the warmth of his home. The white and dull grey theme of the canvas allows the red of the kerchief to stand out drawing the viewer's eye. Monet kept this painting with him all of his life. His wife died shortly after it was completed.
