"Satin skin? Go to Roslin". Sweden's most successful international artists was Malmö native Alexander Roslin. Celebrated at Royal Courts across Europe for his exacting detail when he captured the complexions of his subjects.

Attention to detail and the skillful depiction of expensive fabrics were his forte bringing many prestigious] commissions to the Swedish native.


His homeland's National Museum has organized an exhibit to honor this Swedish hero. Three exhibition halls are utilized with over 100 portraits painted by Roslin during various periods of his life. The exhibition focus has been designed to suggest, in a stylized form, the type of environment within which the 18th Century artist Roslin lived and worked.

Alexander Roslin traversed Europe during his career from Sweden to Italy and finally settling in Paris. The young Roslin was a student of Georg Engelhard Schröder, before embarking on a European tour. It provided the opportunity to make important contacts and network through European society. Roslin achieved the highest honor of the time when Royalty commissioned him to paint their portraits.

Roslin worked at the courts of Parma (1751-2) and Bayreuth(1745-1747).

Lady with a Fan or Lady with the Veilis a portrait of his wife Marie-Suzanne Giroust. It is considered to be one of his finest works.

Upon his death in 1793 he had achieved significant financial success. He died as the then wealthiest artist in Paris.
