Huntsville, Alabama is currently the temporary home of some impressive landscapes from the Uffizi Gallery of Florence, Italy. Italian landscapes has to mean Canaletto, among other Italian superstar artists. Beginning with Renaissance artists, such as Botticelli Painting the Italian Landscape spans to the 18th Century.

Sandro Botticelli

Except for a brief period working on Rome's Sistine Chapel, Sandro Botticelli lived in Florence. Religious subjects such as the Adoration of the Magi dominated his works but he also produced allegorical images. He has been described as the greatest linear artist that Europe ever knew.

The finest view painter of his time, Canaletto began his artistic career creating scenes for theatrical backdrops, working with his father in Venice. On a trip to Rome he began to sketch the beautiful architecture and buildings of the city, which altered his career path. Returning to his home town he devoted his life to his art. The lively city and it's activities provided inspiration for his paintings.

Filippo D'Angeli

Filippo D'Angeli was a Baroque artist who spent most of his life in Florence or Naples. He was known for his battle scenes but his landscapes are fulfilling in their attention to detail.

The opportunity to absorb the unprecedented Italian artistic talent from the Uffizi's collection is a treat for all. Take the time to visit Alabama and the Huntsville Museum of Art before these works have to travel back to their Italian home.
