The largest art collection in Finland is found at the Ateneum Art Museum. Drawing from it's impressive holdings and borrowing works the Museum showcases the Golden Age of Danish Painting, dating from the early 19th Century to the turn of the 20th Century.

The important Danish artists of that time frame are featured in Tales from Denmark including C.W. Eckersberg, Christen Købke, Constantin Hansen, P.C. Skovgaard, Vilhelm Hammershøi, and L.A. Ring.

The Ateneneum was the beneficiary of a donation of important Danish works from shipping magnate H.B. Tobiesen in 1953. This important milestone in the museum's history is honored in this exhibition.

Christen Købke was an outstanding landscape artist and portraitist. He often painted his family and friends. Nature became an important genre for this artist following his studies with Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg.

Called the father of Danish painting Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg or C. W. Eckersberg influenced a generation of artists with his own works and his abilities as a teacher. Perfection was his goal, he was known to teach his pupils to ignore imperfections to achieve this aim.

Like da Vinci, Laurits Andersen became known for his birthplace Ring, in southern Zealand, Denmark. His landscapes often depicted the places he knew best; where he grew up.


Swiss native Bertha Wegmann traveled throughout Europe working with various artists to develop her skill. Her works were popular in Denmark. Her portraits were among her most favored works.
