In 2003 the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium began an important research project that spanned over four years. Its goal was the systematic study of the history of their paintings and the material analysis of these paintings by various scientific methods. Concurrently
the institution started an in-depth study of the artistic theories which guided the humanist painter Rubens’ way in which he created his works. To celebrate the conclusion of these studies an exhibit
highlighting Peter Paul Rubens is on display in Belgium.

The collection includes oil sketches, paintings on a smaller scale as well as monumental altar pieces.
It is unique because it spans Rubens’ most productive period from 1614-1640 when
his creativity and marketing skills developed. It was Peter Paul Rubens who all subsequent
artists need to thank for his unparalleled effort to copyright an artist's output. Rubens was a genius!
