Martín Ramírez's life spanned from rancher to Mexican laborer to inmate at the DeWitt State Hospital
in northern California to artist. He is included in the 'Big Three' referring to outsider artists of the 20th Century.
Originally from the French Art Brut or "Rough Art", outsider
art refers to artists that worked away from the traditional
cultural artistic boundaries. French artist Jean Dubuffet coined the term to define works created by artists who were
confined to insane asylums. In American usage it encompassed
'naive artists' and self-taught artists. Residency in a mental institution was not a requirement to be known as an outsider artist in the USA.

Confinement doesn't dull creativity. Van Gogh produced many important pieces during his
recuperation at St. Rémy.
Ramírez completed over 300 works during the last decade and half of his confinement.
