Contemporary Japanese born artist Takashi Murakami is famed for his marriage between popular cultural themes and traditional Japanese art. His work demands to be seen. The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles responded. They
present the most comprehensive retrospective of his works though it is relatively early in the artist's career. Murakami, born in 1962, earned the honor.

The connection between fine art and popular culture are embodied in Murakami's creations. First the artist envisions characters to tell their story using painting, film, installation art or sculptural form. The next step is marketing using traditional merchandising techniques: key chains, stickers, T-shirts etc.
