Joseph Gegenbach was commonly called Canabas. Born in pre-revolutionary France he followed in his father's footsteps as a cabinetmaker. He is known for creating pieces that could be dismantled making travel easy and his works popular with the senior members of the Army. After being named a 'master' craftsman he was able to open his own shop that was wildly successful. During the darker days of the French revolution and its aftermath this prosperity made him a target. With great difficulty and creativity Gegenbach was able to keep his business more or less intact and his head safe from the guillotine.

Appel's reputation grew during the 50's and he was considered to be one of the best of the post-war Dutch artists.

The opportunity to view any work by the brilliant French artist Jacques-Louis David is to be seized. TEFAF will include The Anger of Achilles depicting the Greek warrior's fury upon learning that he will not be permitted to marry King Agamemnon's daughter Iphigenia. Instead the King has decided to sacrifice Iphigenia to the Goddess Artemis to permit the Greek fleet to sail to Troy. In the painting Iphigenia's mother Clytemnestra attempts to comfort her distraught daughter.

David's appreciation of neo-classical themes are evident in The Anger of Achilles. Devotion to duty, such as in the case of Agamemnon, was a common thread found in many of David's paintings.

British portraitist Sir Thomas Lawrence was almost entirely self-taught, which is incredible considering his skill as an artist. It was his commission to paint Queen Charlotte that made his reputation and he never looked back. Following the defeat of Napoleon, Lawrence was commissioned to paint all of the military commanders and heads of state involved in the monumental victory. Lawrence traveled throughout Europe as the envoy to the Prince Regent, later George IV, to complete this task. It was for this large historical commission that earned the painter his knighthood.

Dutch painter Gerrit Dou was Rembrandt's first pupil, beginning his studies in 1628 in Leiden. After Rembrandt relocated to Amsterdam Dou began to create his own style that altered from his first teacher with minute detail and adding an enamel like surface to his works. He had originally trained with his father in his profession as a glass engraver and clearly adapted glossy surfaces to his works.
