Craig Scott, Gallery Owner, said, “Uttaporn Nimmalaikaew is one of Thailand’s most exciting (and rapidly emerging) artists. He has attracted tremendous attention since winning the Sovereign Asia Art Prize competition of 2006. This Prize is widely regarded as the leading pan-Asian painting prize, despite being in existence for only five years now. Nimmalaikaew has developed a form of mixed-media painting that produces magical results. The paintings start from a canvas backdrop that is set inside a deep casement, and that is then lightly veiled by multiple layers of thread and netting."

Adding, "Nimmalaikaew’s genius lies in the way he imagines, and executes with astonishing virtuosity, what might be called a ‘meta-dimension’ that fuses time, space and spirit. When I first tracked him down and saw his work in Bangkok this past summer, I was, it is no exaggeration to say, stunned by the work and its effect on me. On the second visit it had not lessened. One is transported, one marvels in his work’s presence. The person with me said he reacted with goosebumps when he experienced the work.”

As Uttaporn said in “Inevitable Cycles,” (July/Aug 2006) 16 Asian Art News [Interview of Uttaporn Nimmalaikaew by Jonathan Thomson] “It took me quite a long time to develop my concept. The layers help represent the complexity of life and relationships and all of the stages of life."

The artist continued, "The actual technique started with a mosquito net and things seen through the netting. I intentionally draw the threads through the netting and leave them drooping to suggest a life flowing, of aging, and physical degeneration.

"It is part of my concept that people have to look through my work, not just at it. People have to see my work and experience it…. It is impossible to replicate my work in a photograph.”

The Craig Scott Gallery located on Berkeley Street, just east of Yonge and south of Queen, is one of Toronto's outstanding contemporary art galleries. Director and owner Craig Scott has an eye for talent both locally and, obviously in the case of Uttaporn Nimmalaikaew, internationally.
