Saskatchewan native Darrell Bell's breathtaking landscapes are subject of a solo show at the Roberts Gallery opening December 9, 2006.

Darrell Bell said, "I grew up on the prairies and studied fine art at the University of Saskatchewan. I fell in love with the landscape. I paint that and live in that environment. When you're a student other people tell you what to paint and give you lessons and you're not to do this and do that. The trick as an artist is to find your own voice. What is it that you connect to? For me growing up in the prairies it was prairie landscapes and that feeling of being in prairie space. I love going for walks and walking the dogs and being in that breathing space. I've painted prairie landscapes for twenty-five years and I think over the years the focus has changed from learning about prairie landscapes before and now it's more about the emotional connection and the feeling of the prairie landscape, as opposed to whether a tree looks like a tree. What does it feel like after a rain when you have that lush feeling of landscape or the dry itchiness of fall and trying to paint the feeling that you get being in that space. That's really what the work is about."

Established in 1842 the Roberts Gallery is the oldest art gallery in Canada. It pre-dates Canada's confederation year of 1867. The gallery's history is entwined with outstanding Canadian artists such as the Group of Seven. It was the first gallery to exhibit the Painters Eleven in 1954. Like many new artists the Painters Eleven drew crowds, the largest to date in the Gallery's history. Roberts Gallery has consistently supported Canadian artistic talent.
