Born in the west of France to a family of wine merchants William Bouguereau attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He won the Prix de Rome in 1850 and
accepted the prize, which is a scholarship for 4 years study at the Villa Medici in Rome. That was the seat of the French Academy in Italy, where Bouguereau learned
the artistic techniques of the Classical and Renaissance masters.

William Bouguereau was a respected teacher as well as a gifted artist in his own right. An exhibition has been organized exploring his influence on his students. It is currently on
display at the Philbrook Museum of Art, before journeying to the Appleton Museum of Art, finally concluding its tour at the Frick Art and Historical Center.

"Through his teaching Bouguereau’s gift to America goes beyond the hundreds of
his paintings in public and private institutions throughout the nation. He
helped train a generation of accomplished artists who have contributed to the
history of American art," adds Philbrook Executive Director Brian Ferriso.

William Bouguereau: In the Studios is comprised of 65 paintings, drawings and prints by
Bouguereau and several of his prominent American students, including Walter
Schofiled, Eanger Irving Couse, Elizabeth Jane Gardner and Lawton Parker. Two
works from the Appleton’s collection, Gardner’s Daphnis and Chloe and
Springtime by Pierre-Auguste Cot, are featured in the exhibition.
