Recently IATWM had cause to visit a Tattoo Parlor. Is it art? That's an interesting question for a media that is not in the mainstream. What was intriguing about this gallery was that it encouraged its artists to come up with a work that the wearer would appreciate, and also to create large scale renditions, that one might place in one's home if not permanently on one's skin.
Three years ago when IATWM began one of our goals was to celebrate the contemporary art that was and is found in Toronto. Many cities have an incredible artistic culture that is not always given the ample space to shine. Would we cover tattoo artists? At the time our answer was no. However, having seen the incredible creativity that goes into some permanent markings, perhaps our answer
will change.
To adopt a permanent change to one's skin is a personal choice that isn't one we will address just suggest long thought before making such a life altering decision. That some artists do not shy away from having their works on a not-necessarily new medium is a choice for the potential wearer and their
intimate circle.
The images themselves can stand alone as painting and sculpture and yes even body art.
