Abstract Expressionism master Mark Rothko was born in Dvinsk, Latvia emigrating to the USA as a ten year old boy. He settled in Portland, Oregon with his family and at
age 17 earned a scholarship to Yale University. He left Yale within two years to study with Arshile Gorky at the New School of Design in New York City. Another teacher and influence
upon Rothko was Max Weber at the Art Students League and later Milton Avery.

After some experimentation with Surrealism he began to work on the abstract aesthetic for which he is noted, believing that art should be a tool for both emotional
and religious expression, allowing the viewer to transcend from the earthly experience.
