Music inspired Paul Klee. Right up to his
twentieth year he was still unsure whether to make his life's work art or music.

Although he finally decided to dedicate himself to art, he remained
an impassioned musician, and often played in chamber music sessions
with his friends.

Klee said it was the works and compositional approaches of Johann Sebastian Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart that were most likely to be reflected in his art.

The Zentrum Paul Klee in Berne Switzerland has put on several temporary exhibitions since it opened in June, 2005. Melody and Rhythm, however,
is the first time that one of the Zentrum's exhibitions concentrates on the relationship between graphic arts and another artistic discipline: music.

450 scores and recordings of pieces inspired by Paul Klee or one of his works” explains Dr. Michael Baumgartner, head of the Collection, Exhibition,
Research department of the Zentrum Paul Klee and curator of the exhibition.

Dr. Baumgartner added, “The exhibition includes a music room in which visitors may hear music that Paul Klee particularly admired and played.”

Paul Klee: Melody and Rhythm exhibition features works drawn from the collection of the Zentrum Paul Klee,
complemented by significant loans from European museums, galleries and private collections such as
the Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Kupferstichkabinett and the Kunstmuseum, Basel; the Beyeler Foundation, Riehen; the Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart;
the Museum Ludwig, Cologne and the Heinz Berggrün Collection, Berlin.

different pieces of music linked in some way to the exhibited works are automatically played through the headphones.
These pieces are grouped into six areas of the exhibition space to create six sound clusters, offering an entertainingly varied program
to make this a truly exceptional experience.
