Henry Moore's Warrior with Shield will add cachet to the brand
new home of the Canadian Opera Company (COC) at the Four Seasons Centre
for the Performing Arts. The Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) kindly loaned
the sculpture for a period of 18 months.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for the Gallery,” said Matthew Teitelbaum,
Michael and Sonja Koerner Director and CEO of the AGO. “During this exciting
period of change at the AGO, being able to build this kind of partnership
with our fellow cultural institutions is significant. It gives us the
opportunity to introduce the Henry Moore Collection to a different group of
arts patrons, and to place art in the centre of everyday life.”
The COC is delighted, "this is the beginning of a thrilling collaboration, and I am deeply grateful to the AGO
for making it possible,” said COC General Director Richard Bradshaw.
The pose and mutilated limbs of the Warrior with Shield sculpture is meant to display the dark urges in our world to dominate and destroy. It was
conceived and created shortly following the Second World War and is a reminder of the horrors of war and ongoing conflicts across the globe.
The AGO's Moore collection is extensive. It is home to the world’s most
comprehensive public collection of the artist’s work, one that numbers
almost 1,000 pieces in various media including bronzes, plaster maquettes,
drawings and prints.

Sandra Tarantino discussed her style, "The progression of my sculptural relief paintings over the past five
years has involved continued exploration in how the physical
manipulation of a substrate contributes to the aesthetic impact of the
painted image and how this influences the overall reading of a painting.
The physical base of my shaped forms are constructed out of various
plywood to create a box-like structure, which is then covered with pre-gessoes
and painted canvas."
Adding, "The series Adrift has evolved from past inspiration I derived in
studying Minimalist art as well as recent observations of the Canadian
landscape. In keeping with the Minimalist style, my intention has been
to dynamically and intimately engage the viewer within each piece. These
works look at the simplicity of form and it’s affects when placed within
a spatial setting. The Adrift series explores a similar form throughout
the body of work- each piece bows from an upper curve, into a convex
form and downward to a point. When seen from a distance, head on, the
form appears flat, yet when closer the distortion of the convex shape
takes effect. This is reminiscent of the slight curve when viewing a
horizon and plays on the optical illusions we encounter daily, not
always clearly seeing what is actually there."
