New York City based gallery Phurniture Inc brought a selection of its works to Toronto in a Paul H. Johnson curated exhibit. Johnson discussed some of the pieces. "Frank Lloyd Wright furniture was produced in the 50's by Henredon. It's the only production furniture done by Frank Lloyd Wright. The Toronto show has 3 pieces but in total we have 9 pieces that is a complete bedroom set: stool, mirror, shelf plus these three pieces."

Rasulo

"Prospero Rasulo is a designer for Zannotta. This was for an exhibit in Milan called 'Trash Furniture.' Industrial Designers were encouraged to go through the city, find trash and bring it back to life. His concept is always about surface; he decided to paint an old chest."

"This one is a Marco Zinni piece dating from 1996. It's manufactured by Bitossi in Italy. They are all edition pieces. This one is an edition of 12 for the largest size. There are 10 pieces in the series. All are constructed from two pieces and were hand painted by two famous Italian cartoonists. Each piece is signed, numbered and dated with their names. The ceramic was done by Marco Zinni and the painting was done by them."

"Joe D'Urso designed this table in 1981 and it was manufactured by D'Urso. It is all stainless steel and on casters. It was extremely expensive to produce this table, to polish it and have seamless stainless steel, so it was only in production for 3 to 4 years."

The passing of Tom Hodgson marked the end of an era. Hodgson was the last of the first generation of post World War II abstract painters. He passed away in February of this year. Hodgson was a founding members of Painters 11, a pioneering collection of artists that triumphed large format abstract expressionist painting.


Christopher Cutts Gallery organized a retrospective of Tom Hodgson's career spanning five decades. Cutts said, "I met Tom back in 1987 and was struck by his direct, enthusiastic approach to painting and life. He was an original whose talents were abundant and thankfully, uncompromised."

Whether it be Impressionists who liked painting en plein air; artists like to work together and use one another to keep the creative juices flowing.

Recently the Channel Gallery opened in Toronto's Distillery District. It is a partnership between five artists; Helena Frei, Melanie Gordon, Sunmi Jung, Susan Leopold and Peggy Mersereau. These five women launched their gallery with the exhibit Spar exploring the relationship between conflict and support systems.
