Jean says, "my education is classical. I worked in portraiture for ten years, at first in pastel, then black and white then watercolor,
the medium didn't matter. I made copies of classical works from museums."

That is a traditional European training ground. "One day I was in a Japanese Art Gallery,
Mitsuko, I saw one painting with this veneer. It was like a bomb for me. I was very excited and began to mix material together. I use many different kinds of paper and fabrics
in the creation. It becomes the same when I add the enamel."
He began young, "I was three years old and had five sisters. One of my sisters told me that I was an artist and there it began and continues to this day."

For Jean, "the subject is important. The painting has some emotions. Sometimes I have a subject, such as for example flowers, but to me it's the color that is important.
Sometimes I prefer to make abstracts."
May Heung, Owner IMA Gallery, was delighted with the reaction to the Jean Tannous exhibit. "It was wonderful. Jean is new to Canada but because of the color
and the balance people love his work. They say it makes them feel happy. It is a unique style. One doesn't find the dramatic color base in
other galleries." She describes Jean, "painting comes naturally to him. One can see a lot of different subject matters; he is so skilled. His
painting is just wonderful."

One of May's favorites, among Jean's work was Blue Flowers. "It's very simple in color; it's darker and lighter blue with three flowers in one
large image. Looking at the painting one simply says 'Wow!' at the feelings that flow from
the canvas."

"I love the aspect of thinking of the future that comes from this
particular painting, Thinking of the Future II. The lady's dress is so formal yet you can see her face, it's a look of the future." Jean Tannous is
a portraitist and that comes though in this Degasesque piece.

May explained, "Ima is a Japanese word that means 'now' or 'this moment'. Originally we had a store in
Hong Kong named 'Ima' and we wanted to continue to use the name here in Toronto."
In July Ima Gallery will feature a Montreal based artist Mark
Cartile who paints in two colors: black and white. May says, "his work is fabulous despite it's stark nature."
