Marine landscapes are what first comes to mind when one thinks of American artist Winslow Homer. Early in his career Homer made wood engravings for magazines and newspapers, capturing daily moments and immortalizing them.

These works began in 1857 with a then 21-year-old Winslow Homer creating images of individuals enjoying social events. The outbreak of the American Civil War in 1861 brought about a commission as a war correspondent and altered the subject matter of his engravings to that of the daily activities of Union troops.

Chief Curator Ellen Simak said “This exhibition offers our visitors a chance to see an aspect of Homer’s work they may not be very familiar with. These black and white illustrations were an important part of Homer’s early career. Later they offered him an avenue to explore themes (and sometimes the same scenes) he was already working on in his paintings and watercolors.”

“Our summer camps and drop in studios on weekends will focus on Homer’s work because we can find out so much about children’s lives in the 19th century by looking at it. And, just like Homer, we love children here at the Hunter and are focusing on them and their lives,” said Tim Brown, Associate Curator of Education. “Children will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities related to childhood as a common theme in American art and life.”

Winslow Homer in America encompasses 125 black and white wood engravings.
