Ten years ago the Georgia Museum of Art moved locales and this anniversary is celebrated with several events, including an exhibit specifically celebrating a decade's worth of acquisitions.

History of the Museum

Alfred Heber Holbrook founded the Georgia Museum of Art in 1945. Its first home was on the North Campus at the University of Georgia. That space now is home to the office of the President of the University. Holbrook was the museum's director for a quarter of a century and presented over 900 works of art to the museum's permanent collection.

His efforts paid off because, in 1982, the Georgia Museum of Art was designated as the official art museum of the state of Georgia. Like most art museums the collection continued to grow and it expanded beyond its current facilities. Ten years ago, in 1996, the Georgia Museum of Art moved lock, stock and art work into its new home which is part of the Performing and Visual Arts Complex. The change of locale had an immediate benefit of doubling the available exhibition space.

The collection has continued to expand in many different ways, including the generosity of artists themselves, such as Pierre Daura who gifted one of the works in this exhibit, Martha at Thirteen, to the Georgia Museum of Art.

Pierre Daura was one of the founders the group Cercle et Carré. They believe that the "geometric purity" of the circle and the square are able to enrich the work of Modernist artists.

Other artists featured in this exhibit include John Taylor Arms, Francis Hyman Criss, Jasper Francis Cropsey, Pierre Daura, John Stockton de Martelly, Andrée Ruellan and more.
