History and current events coupled with army survival manuals and personal experiences are an eclectic
group from which the artist draws her inspiration. Reoccurring themes within her work are
women, animals and hybrid beings engaged in magical, dreamlike activities
“Amy Cutler has a rapidly growing international audience,” said Lisa Freiman, curator of contemporary art at the IMA.
“Through our expanded galleries and enhanced Forefront series, the IMA now has the opportunity to present the works of

Over fifty works form this exhibit which is drawn both from the IMA's permanent collection and lenders to the show.
Cutler is known for her female populated images often with recognizable features such as
elongated noses, teakettle heads, broomstick arms or wearing altered hoop skirts. Lisa Freiman explains,
“Cutler’s delightful world of ambiguity is tied to our everyday lives and fantasies.
She revels in leaving the responsibility of interpretation with the viewer.”
After the exhibition closes at the Indianapolis Museum of Art
it travels to Providence, Rhode Island and will be on display at
the David Winton Bell Gallery at Brown University.
