The Monterey Peninsula Colony art community is widely believed to have been formed after the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. One of the goals of this exhibit is to discount this incorrect theory and demonstrate through the works on display that the Monterey Peninsula was a thriving locale for artists to meet well before 1906.

Organized by the Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, this is the first exhibit exploring the Monterey Peninsula painting and photography during a specific period 1875-1907 in the state's history.

The Artists

Featured artists include Jules Tavernier, Arthur Matthews, Mary Brady, M. Evelyn McCormick, Raymond Dabb Yelland, Charles Dickman, Charles Rollo Peters, Charles Bradford Hudson, Mary DeNeale Morgan and William Keith. A key component is to examine the genres associated with the community: French Barbizon, Tonalism and Impressionism.

Mary Brady

British born Mary Brady was considered an integral part of the development of the Monterey art community. She briefly worked in Giverny during the height of the Impressionist movement. Thomas Robinson used Brady as a model, while both were in France for what would be his last portrait painted in Giverny, November. Her work with Evelyn McCormick aided in the development of Californian Impressionism.

Many of the paintings of M. Evelyn McCormick illustrate adobes or missions in the Monterey Peninsula. She received a commission, from the Monterey municipal government, to create twelve oils of historic buildings of the area.

Raymond Dabb Yelland

As the Director of the San Francisco School of Design, Raymond Dabb Yelland, came to influence many of the up and coming California artists during the latter part of the 19th Century. His style was often compared to the Hudson River School of artists.

Charles Dickman

Born in Germany, Charles Dickman and his parents emigrated to the USA when he was a toddler. He was a trained lithographer. He studied art in Europe before settling in Monterey where there is now a street named for him.

Charles Rollo Peters

Nocturnal images and impressionist style landscapes are the legacy of Charles Rollo Peters to the Monterey Peninsula Art Colony. He studied extensively in France, living there for five years with his first wife.

Charles Bradford Hudson

Charles Bradford Hudson was born in Ontario, Canada. His direct ancestors include John Jay and William Bradford. He often painted marine subjects. Another favorite landscape he oft painted was desert scenes.

Mary DeNeale Morgan

Mary DeNeale Morgan was a student of both William Keith and William Merritt Chase. The San Francisco born Morgan was known equally for painting and etching.

Granville Redmond

A childhood bout with Scarlet Fever left Granville Redmond with a permanent hearing loss. Attending the Berkeley School for the Deaf he was encouraged to develop his artistic talents. He became friends with Charlie Chaplin and acted in several of the comic master's films. Redmond utilized sign language while acting in silent films. A recurring theme of his paintings were California wildflowers.
