From an early age Keith Haring liked to draw. His first teacher was his father and his first subjects were children's cultural influences such as Dr. Seuss and Disney characters. By age twenty he had a solo exhibition at the Pittsburgh Arts and Crafts Center. Later that year he moved to New York City and enrolled in the School of Visual Arts. It was in this city that Haring discovered a growing counter art culture outside the traditional galleries and museums.

His friends included fellow artists Kenny Scharf and Jean-Michel Basquiat along side the popular musicians and performance artists.

The artist began to experiment with various techniques and medium including performance, video and installation. Haring was impressed with Christo's works specifically Running Fence and Andy Warhol's oeuvre.

At the beginning of the 1980s Haring was drawn to the blank advertising panels in a subway station. These panels were covered with black matte paper and he picked up white chalk and began to draw. He produced hundreds of these 'subway drawings'.

In 1986 Keith Haring opened The Pop Shop a retail outlet for his work. He painted murals on the Berlin Wall. The graffiti artist decorated hot air balloons, cars and other functional items during his brief but impressive career.

The artist contracted AIDS during the epidemic in 1988 and died when he was 31.
