From an early age Keith Haring liked to draw. His first teacher was his father and his first subjects were children's cultural
influences such as Dr. Seuss and Disney characters. By age twenty he had a solo exhibition at the Pittsburgh Arts and Crafts Center.
Later that year he moved to New York City and enrolled in the School of Visual Arts. It was in this city that Haring discovered a
growing counter art culture outside the traditional galleries and museums.

At the beginning of the 1980s Haring was drawn to the blank advertising panels in a subway station. These panels were covered with
black matte paper and he picked up white chalk and began to draw. He produced hundreds of these 'subway drawings'.
