Congratulations Cleveland!

Earlier this year IATWM invited any North American city's official tourism board to submit an entry describing why their city should be honored as International Art Treasures Web Magazine's choice as City of Culture 2006. The winning city would be featured in the September edition of IATWM. Our choice is Cleveland.

The city takes its name, with a slight spelling adjustment, from her founder General Moses Cleaveland. The port city is located on the banks of Lake Erie. It is home to over 140 arts and cultural organizations.

“Given the city’s importance as a center for design innovation and training during the 20th century, this exhibition should resonate especially well in Cleveland,” noted Dr. Charles L. Venable, CMA’s Deputy Director for Collections and Programs.

The exhibit includes over 300 multi-media objects and explores the evolution of both the object and its impact on everyday life.

“This exhibition looks at how the philosophies of the Arts and Crafts movement spread across Europe and to the United States, influencing not only the way objects were made, but how they looked and were used,” CMA Curator of Decorative Arts and Design Stephen Harrison said, adding . “This landmark exhibition is the first to examine how widespread the Arts and Crafts movement became as designers and consumers alike embraced its ideals.”

Next year Cleveland's International Film Festival celebrates its 30th anniversary scheduled to be held March 16-26.

An adage that is more often true than false says that residents do not take advantage of their hometown culture. While Cleveland is a place to visit anytime, not only in 2006 as it reigns as IATWM's continental City of Culture, there is an added bonus for those lucky to call the city home.

Late Out - Late In helps where participating companies accept employees arriving two hours late the day after they attend a live performance or other event. A valid ticket stub is required as proof of enjoyment of a local event. This program is currently supported in 25 USA cities. A city's culture is meant to be enjoyed by all, not limited to tourists.

2006 the place to be is Cleveland - IATWM's honoree as the North American City of Culture.
