The mission is to make known, promote and preserve Quebec art from all periods while ensuring a place for international art through acquisitions, exhibitions and other cultural activities.

The Musée houses over 22,000 artworks, the majority of which were created in Quebec dating back to the 17th Century.

It is housed in three buildings. One was formally a prison. There are twelve exhibition galleries alone. In 1993 a sculpture garden was created and includes works by Charles Daudelin, Jean-Paul Riopelle and Bernar Venet.

Gallery Three, or the Riopelle Gallery, displays 35 works from one of the province's outstanding 20th Century artists, Jean-Paul Riopelle.

The Musée is the proud owner of the largest existing collection of Riopelle's works. On view are the fresco L'Hommage a Rosa Luxemburg, Sanit-Fabien and Pangnirtung.

Gallery Eight is home to Quebec City, The Art of a Colonial Capital comprised of 135 works from 80 different artists. This is where the visitor will find the spectacular work depicting the four nieces of Théophile Hamel.

Tradition and Modernism in Quebec contains 62 paintings and sculpture, presented in the manner of an early salon, and their overwhelming displays attempting to cover every spot on the wall with the amassed collection. This gallery has works from James Wilson Morrice, Horatio Walker and Aurèle de Foy Suzor-Coté.

A lady lying among the paper that infiltrates her usual routine is one way to capture when the system overwhelms the individual.


Artists include Michael Snow, Michel de Broin, Claudine Cotton and more, with works that focus on a notion of systems, both in a usual and occasionally irregular demonstration.

Patrice and Andrée Drouin owned a fabulous collection, showcasing international avant-garde talents, that has been donated to the MNBA. They choose to put together an exhibition of a dozen works selected from this generous gift.


The Drouins spent three decades on their collection, paying particular attention to the current Quebec art scene. Many institutions have benefited from their patronage, including 59 works to the MNBA.
