Unique is one way to describe the intriguing Tadao Ando. He is self-taught in his field. Ando is the only architect, to date, who has won four prestigious architectural  awards: Pritzker, Carlsberg, Praemium Imperiale and the Kyoto Prize.

At the height of his career a retrospective of his achievements coupled with a preview of his future goals is contained in Ando: The Complete Works

Like its subject the tome is in and of itself unique, written in three languages, English, German and French. Each follows one another in the section as the architecture and architect are explored.

Every project is explored from its location through production to completion.

Anecdotal information are common place in the tome, defining not just the project but the relevance of its location.

Nariwa Japan is known for copper production lending a synonymous tinge to the housing. Does the architect draw from this as inspiration or look elsewhere?

The Nariwa Museum is the primary home of the collection of Japanese artist Torajiro Kojima (1881-1929). Native to Nariwa, Kojima, studied in Europe influencing his style which is known as Japanese Impressionism. While in Europe he purchased many works that formed the initial collection at the Ohara Museum of Art.

Ando included a man made pool which visitors pass in order to gain entrance to the Nariwa Museum. Pleasing on the outside is a characteristic of the architect setting the scene for a interior that provides the light and space necessary to showcase the art on display set within an architectural triumph.

Scale drawings, plans and the finished product are all included in this fascinating look at the man and his art.
