Change in the Air

Massive Change, an exhibit currently on display at the Art Gallery of Ontario, breaks preconceived notions of art exhibitions. Its theme is the changing focus of design and what can be done with the knowledge base that we have now for the better of all living creatures.

There aren't any masterpieces in the display under normal definitions of the term. Yet, the exhibit is profound in looking at creativity such as the development of the Segway. Instead of a focus on modernization in preconceived terms it reevaluates the model.

Normally when considering the detriment of delays in transporting an injured body to a hospital the solution is build roads, which bring more cars that may not provide the desired solution or could add more problems requiring further exploration and efforts to resolve. Instead the model was examined and what developed was the idea of using bicycle transportation with a qualified medical technician at the pedal to address the issue of immediate care to facilitate transportation and then bring the individual to a full treatment center. It's novel and may suit developing cultures without destroying their way of life by bringing modernism to them.

This is not a new world order or a one world solution, often dreaded. It is a solution that meets the needs of some, inexpensively compared to the alternative, without removing from others that which works for them.

Is it art? That is in the eye of the beholder. Massive Change is informative, creative and unique and that makes it worth an exploration.
