Belgian Romanticism is the period that arose during King Leopold I's reign of 1831-1865. The extraordinary exhibit is presented in three separate locations. The MRBAB's chosen locale is in the Museum's building at the Place Royale. It is here that one will find Gustaf Wappers' Episode of the September Days 1830 in its recently restored frame.

The romanticism of Belgium is centered around passions and heady emotions encountered as the country came into its own, no longer under the control of foreign entities. Its own history was to be remembered and celebrated via creative endeavors.

Antoine-Joseph Wiertz, the Belgian Romantic painter, has a museum named for him in Brussels. The museum's origins were a collaboration between the artist, who wished his legacy assured, and the Belgian government who wanted to confirm the identity of their new country. In 1850 his government made the offer to provide a studio for him which became the museum bearing his name. The artist was less than pleased with the recognition not matching what he felt he deserved for his talent.

The macabre intrigued the artist and was reflected in some of his most noted works, such as The Premature Burial, inspired by the writings of Edgar Allan Poe.
