Artistic Amsterdam
2005 is a milestone for the Dutch as they celebrate the Silver Jubilee of their Queen. Not that a reason is needed to visit the beautiful capital
city of the Netherlands with their extensive collection of art. Rembrandt, Vermeer and Van Gogh are all found in the many museums in Amsterdam.
The Rijksmuseum
The Grand Dame of art galleries may be the Rijksmuseum, home to an extensive collection including
the painting regarded by many as the greatest masterpiece of all, Rembrandt's Night Watch.

Amsterdam is nicknamed 'Venice of the North'. It is fitting that the Hermitage Amsterdam hosts an exhibit of 18th Century Venetian artwork.
With an increasingly wealthy merchant class, one method to demonstrate to all their riches was to build fine homes and fill them with an
impressive art collection. Canaletto's landscapes were a popular choice, along with works by Benardo Bellotto, Francesco Guardi
and Giambattista Tiepolo.
Some believe Tiepolo was the greatest Italian artist of his age, he believed in hard work and the result was a tremendous output of paintings,
etchings and frescoes. The infusion of light into his work even in shadow add to the radiance of the image.
City views, genre painting and more are represented in this exhibit drawing from the Hermitage in St. Petersburg's magnificent 18th Century
Venetian art collection.

Van Gogh's Sunflowers and The Bedroom both influenced Egon Schiele.
Thus an exhibition of his work has a welcome home at the
Van Gogh Museum.
|
At first Schiele's work was not well received for his favorite themes, sexuality and death, did not sit well in early 20th Century Europe. He
pushed the envelope too far in his artistic pursuits and offended sensibilities, giving him a 24 day stint in prison. His career was extremely
brief, with his first works drawing attention while he was 20 and yet within 8 years he would succumb to the Spanish flu.

Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art
Leporello
A Trip through the Collection
March 11 - June 12, 2005
|
Art Historian Carel Blotkamp, Professor of Modern Art, Vrije Universiteit, has made a selection of works from the Stedelijk's collection.
The professor choose to use strict chronology, beginning with the founding of the
'Association to Form a Public Collection of
Contemporary Art' in 1874. The idea was to choose one item per year, resulting in 130 works, each
selection having a connection to the one
directly before and the one directly after it. It is meant to be all inclusive rather than focus on the famous or infamous.
