The Operation of Hours

IATWM rarely includes opening and closing hours in our articles recognizing they are subject to change. Instead we include appropriate links for those interested in additional information in order to plan a visit to the subject matter, including confirming operation hours.

Like many of life's lessons this was one learned the hard way. One of the many art pieces that were on our must-see list, well before IATWM was born, was Michelangelo's Pietà. His magnificent image of Mary holding her dead son. The statue is significant as it is the only art that the artist ever signed.

During a trip to Italy one day was set aside to visit the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel and then tour the Basilica. First the stairs to the top and then the interior to view among other items, the Pietà. Hours of operation confirmed, the day planned before stepping on the plane and jetting to Rome.

The Vatican Museums are breathtaking, the Sistine Chapel is a masterpiece, the steep climb to the top of St. Peter's provides an unparalleled view of the city and the interior of the Basilica. Then came time to see the Pietà, only to discover that a special service had been planned and naturally the Basilica was closed to all visitors. A polite request to see the Pietà and only the Pietà was politely refused. Disappointment yes, but the main function of the Basilica must be respected. There was always the hope of a future visit to Italy to view Michelangelo's work.

The trip to Italy turned out to be unnecessary. All that was needed to view Pietà, was a subway journey in Toronto stopping at the Royal Ontario Museum. During World Youth Day in Toronto, the Vatican organized a loan of some art and artifacts to the ROM included in this exhibit was Michelangelo's Pietà.

Confirming hours of operation is always beneficial unless fate brings a missed opportunity to your doorstep.
