Coordinated from the permanent collection, the female form in
portraiture is displayed with contributions from Reginald Marsh and
Robert Henri among many more at the Springfield Museums.
American painter Robert Henri was one of the catalysts to the
creation of the Ashcan school, an off-shoot of "The Eight". Henri
believed that art should come from life not from the theoretical. It
was a lesson he passed on to his art students. His influence in some
ways overshadowed his art work.
Reginald Marsh is well known for his love of slum based scenes of
the underbelly of New York life, particularly Coney Island and
Times Square arcades. Perhaps his love for this subject matter was
in response to the wealthy lifestyle to which he had been born.
Springfield, Massachusetts is the home to noted children's author
Theodor Geisel or Dr. Seuss. The new Dr. Seuss National
Memorial Sculpture Gardens form part of the Springfield Museums and
are an added bonus to artworks.
Fine art, celebrating women, a warm tribute to the female mystique
throughout the years in Springfield.
