Where's the North American Capital of Culture?
That's a good question. The December 2004 edition of IATWM explores the
numerous activities that
Cork, Ireland has planned as they prepare for being the 2005
European Culture Capital.
Our readers are aware that in 2003 we featured
the two cities that were designated as 2004 Culture Capitals by the EU,
Genoa and
Lille.
The Organization of American States also selects cities as Cultural
Capitals similar to the European Union. In 2004 one North American and
one South American city were honored with this designation.
IATWM made numerous contacts with both cities hoping to present them
during their special year. We failed, and that is why they were not
covered at all.
Cork, like Genoa and Lille before her, actively worked to promote the
city to the world. The Italian Government Tourism Board had a wealth of information
that they shared, excited that the magnificent port City was so honored.
The Lille organizers were an excellent resource and their Irish
counterparts are doing a tremendous job not only of organizing, which is
a massive undertaking, but promoting their city as an art capital and
tourism destination.
Both Genoa and Lille set the bar high and it is evident that Cork
plans to do her best to exceed the incredible standards they set as
European Culture Capitals. |
