IATWM Goes to the Movies
Amedeo Modigliani is subject of an exhibit organized by the Jewish
Museum that is shortly to open at the Art Gallery of Ontario, previewed
here.
The Italian artist makes an exciting appearance in the theatres in
the new movie, entitled Modigliani, that was a gala inclusion in the
Toronto International Film Festival, 2004. IATWM had the opportunity to
view Modigliani and for the first time we include a review of a
movie.
IATWM, as our loyal readers are aware, usually confines itself to
coverage of non-performing arts such as painting, sculpture, wearable
art, textile design and so on. Recently there have been movies dealing
with artists' lives. Ed Harris' Pollock is an example. Hollywood,
and of course independent movie producers have a wealth of subjects to
choose from in the genre of artistic biography. The bon vivant, the
irascible, the driven all can be used to describe various visual artists
past and present that would easily fill two hours of screen time to tell
a story and introduce their specific and individual art to a different
audience.
Given the overwhelming positive response both Modigliani
received this year, and Pollock in a prior year at the Toronto
International Film Festival, the audience is hungry for more!
