The Art of Romare Bearden
October 14, 2004 through January 9, 2005
The Whitney Museum of American Art
"This retrospective is a magnificent overview of the full range of Romare
Bearden's genius," says Adam D. Weinberg, Director of the Whitney Museum.
The exhibit includes paintings, drawings and watercolors, monotypes and
edition prints, collages and much more. The themes of the works are as
diverse as their genre, a reflection of the artist's numerous interests.
Religion, Everyday life, Jazz clubs, history, mythology and literature touch
on some of the topics presented.
Romare Bearden was a Charlotte, North Carolina native.
His family joined the Great Migration north bringing their then
3-year old son to what would be his home from then onward, New York
City. Bearden's visual arts narrative takes the visitors from
the rural South to the bustling North, from Harlem to the Caribbean.
Besides his art he was a respected writer and a noted orator discussing
both artistic and social issues. Ronald Reagan presented The National Medal of Arts to Romare Bearden in 1987.
The exhibition includes Berkeley - The City and Its People, 1973,
with imposing dimensions of 10 x 16 feet. It is the first time the work will
be on display outside of the Berkeley City Council Chambers after its 1974
installation.
Romare Bearden's only sculpture is a highlight of the
exhibit. Mauritius is an African from Upper Egypt who became a
martyred Roman soldier.
This is an excellent opportunity to learn
about one of America's finest artists, Romare Bearden.
