Monet, Meissen and International Art Fairs! Just a taste of the events
and activities that are available for Zürich visitors!
Any trip to this beautiful city has to include a stop at the Museum of Fine
Arts, better know as the Kunsthaus. The Museum traces its history back to 1787.
Members of the Künstlergesellschaft were required to donate
one piece of artwork, either their own or one they had acquired and the
collection grew. The Künstlergesellschaft, still in existence today, was formed
by artists and art lovers. The current museum was opened in 1910 and has and is
undergoing renovations expected to be completed in 2005.
The Kunsthaus has the largest Edvard Munch collection outside
of Norway. It is the home to two of Monet's Water Lily paintings and features
such noted Swiss artists as Johann Heinrich Fuseli Ferdinand Hodler, Concrete
artist Richard Paul Lohse, Pipilotti Rist and Peter Fischli / David Weiss. There
is an extensive impressionist collection along with Baroque paintings and
medieval sculptures.
Monet's Garden: Oct 29 - Feb 27, 2005
Beautifully kept gardens were appreciated by Monet who loved to paint in
his beloved parkland, Giverny, which provided the inspiration for many of
his nature themed works and series. Of all of Monet's series such as
haystacks the most famous has to be his multiple renditions of water
lilies.
Seventy-five paintings will form Monet's Garden, including
some from private Swiss collections, along with loans from European and
American Museums. The collection spans the early impressionist years to
the late Water Lily paintings, also known as The Grandes Décorations.

Zurich, St. Peter's is a must for art enthusiasts. The tower is a
late Romanesque-Gothic style and includes the largest clock face on a
Church Tower anywhere in Europe.

The Grossmüenster Church, with its twin towers, is considered the symbol of
the city of Zurich. Lore holds that Charlemagne ordered this church to be
built on the spot where Felix and Regula were buried after they were
martyred. Zwingli and Bullinger famously launched their protest, the catalyst
to the Swiss-German Reformation. All visitors must take the time to view the
Romanesque crypt.
The Grossmüenster has a choir window by Augusto Giacommeti, the abstract
painter and cousin to Alberto Giacommeti, the Swiss Sculptor.
Monet, Porcelain, Contemporary Art, Christmas Markets just a taste of what
zesty delights Zurich has to offer to the world!
