Sculpture: From Antiquity to the Present Day From The Eighth Century BC to the
Twentieth Century, is one of the finest reference books currently available.
|
The Great Art of Antiquity
The first part spans the eighth century BC through the fifth century AD.
Naturally this covers Greek, Etruscan and Roman sculpture. A series of essays
are included which focus on each section, coupled with spectacular photographs.
The essays are written to discuss the history and development of sculpture
rather than a review of each piece. Sculpture develops over time and the
influences of the different cultures have a profound affect throughout the ages.
The Great Art of the Middle Ages
Continuing from the 5th Century through the 15th Century this section
focuses primarily on Romanesque to Gothic sculpture. Obviously the key change is
the dominance of religion in this period, not to suggest the Greek Gods were
overlooked earlier. The church promoted this period going so far as to
commission works to ensure their vision of Christ and God were the ones captured
for prosperity.
The Great Tradition of Sculpture
The 15th-18th Century naturally includes Renaissance, Mannerism, Baroque and
Rococo. In the opening introduction, editor Jean-Luc Daval observes that unlike
painting sculpture is often found where is was made. This allows the viewer to
see the work as the artist wanted it seen. The incomparable Michelangelo
obviously figures heavily in this section with an excellent essay devoted to
The Triumph of Michelangelo.
The Adventure of Modern Sculpture
The reader travels along the 19th and 20th Centuries as modern influences
begin. Rodin's influence on the rebirth of sculpture as an important artistic
medium. Then along comes Picasso who breaks all norms with his innovative
techniques.
Sculpture, with over 1100 pages and essays is not
meant to be read at one sitting. It also should not be reviewed on an essay by
essay basis in a brief synopsis. That would remove the thrill that can be found
in the individual discovery of the various talents of the essayists summoned to
create this informative and intriguing reference work.
Enjoy each essay whether in order or start with the ones
that discuss the famous sculptors of the world or personal favorites. This book
is meant to be savored like fine wine as the reader indulges in a passion for
sculpture one delicious essay at a time.
