Toronto Art Scene

They did it again those talented volunteers and organizers of the Annual Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition. They hosted a popular art event in the midst of Toronto Summer.

Jewelry Box by John Ireland

Artist: John Ireland
Medium: Wood
TOAE Category: Wood
Dimensions: 15 x 12 x 4 in

John Ireland takes great care in his wood products, ensuring all surfaces are smooth. Put your hand under one of his tables and it will feel exactly the same as the top. The artist points out that while he's creating the piece he sees it from all angles and that gives him the incentive to add that extra special touch.

John describes his jewelry boxes as "versions of traditional cabinet-makers' toolboxes."

Sylvia Naylor finds inspiration from nature saying, "My work is usually based on the natural environment from ideas gathered from sketches, observations and photographs when I am out walking, cycling, paddling my canoe or gardening."

The pieces can take "several weeks but I may well have several ones on the go." Sylvia says she has "become quick over the years."

Painting the negative intrigues Bonnie Brooks. She adds, "The illusive negative space, that area which surrounds a shape plays a vital role in the process. Without the negative space, the shape cannot exist."

Bonnie was honored to have one of her watercolors selected for HM Queen Elizabeth II for addition to the Royal Collection of Drawings & Watercolors at Windsor Castle in 2001

TOAE continues its long tradition of including students in many of the categories. For many this will be their first opportunity to meet a large crowd who wish to view art and learn what is happening in the Toronto Art Scene. Not to suggest that all of the artists are from Toronto. Many travel from far and wide to enter the juried event and the successful ones attend.

Flower by Jennifer Linton

"It is a collage, it's fabrics, it's high relief. I wanted to make it look metal like with a patina. It has those beautiful patina colors greens, blues and moss greens. It's a small piece, fairly light, and it's kind of fungus like to me. I'm not quite sure where the idea came from. I just love the way it started to grow organically. I let it grow like a forest and then stopped myself and it was finished," explains Denyse Courville when asked to describe Sea Forest

Denyse defines her style as, "all different types, it's not painting, it's not sculpture. I'm not quite sure where I fit which is fine because I don't want to be pigeon-holed. Mixed media is the most accurate I can get."

Peter Shoebridge's Andrea "is done in clay. It's the original model head, from which I will cement studies that vary. What's unique about this piece is the openings in it. It's as though the piece can be looked at as either disintegrating or coming together. I'm concerned about making it a portrait and at the same time bringing out the sculptural qualities of any particular face or feature."

Peter has entered the juried competition as a painter in prior years. However this time he was chosen for his sculptures. Peter explains, "Sculpture was my earliest interest. Painting was a later interest. I'm currently doing both and trying to decide whether I need to stop and do one or the other." His favorite genre is sculpture, but he adds the caveat, "that's because I'm here at the show looking at it. I really don't know."

Jewelry is always popular at TOAE. Visiting the jewelry booths might take an extra few moments of time as there are always crowds to view these artisan's wares.

Annette VanLeeuwen was one that had a popular booth during the sunny weekend.  "I do a line of work that incorporates sterling silver and copper. I started about 7 years ago working with copper. I love using that in combination with silver because the contrast the two metals give each other which embraces the warmth of the copper. Over the years I've developed different ways of using the two by incorporating them together. I found that people have responded well."

Arleigh Wood uses computers in the creation of her art, one of the newer categories at the TOAE. "Mating Calls uses a technique of digital collage. I take my own photos, drawings and paintings and I scan them into the computer. I then manipulate them in the computer and have them printed on archival paper in limited editions."

She describes her unique style. "I actually work a lot with the symbol of the bird and the circle, that search for finding the perfect circle, the circle of life. The idea of the Zen Buddhist circle, the circle brush stroke that you always try to do to make it perfect. I use that in my work with a lot of different textures. I'm very interested in nature and bringing it into a modern view."

Jennifer Linton was recognized at the 2004 TOAE. "It's very exciting I won an Honorable Mention in Printmaking." She said. "My prints are [created in] a process called intaglio which involves a metal plate, in my case copper. I draw directly onto the plate and immerse it in an acid bath which then bites where I have drawn and prints lines that are then filled with ink and run through a press."

Jennifer is accomplished at drawing as well as printmaking. "My drawings are colored pencil. The Familiar is just a small 5 x 7 pencil drawing that I did. A lot of my work is self-referential so I did a portrait of myself with a two-headed cat. My work is quite odd as it's very fantasy driven. I make a lot of historical references to mythology and biblical stories. Some of it is just simply a personal mythology that I've made up."

Quiet Conversation by Guinevere Pura

Medium: Photography
TOAE Category: Photography
Dimensions: 8 x 10 in

"Quiet Conversation is a photo taken near the water filtration plant at Queen and Victoria Park. It's one of the very few photographs that I have of people." Guinevere Pura discusses one of her entries at TOAE. "Right now I find it a little bit difficult to take pictures of people. The two people in the photograph are completely unaware that I did take a picture. Sometimes I find it is invading their space to take pictures of people. It's quiet and there is a warmness to it, although it was taken in the wintertime. It's a very simple composition." She adds, she prefers to photograph "he scenes of Toronto. If I do photograph people, then I want to photograph their activity or their back, I don't want to identify these people with their faces."
