Stockholm's Auktionsverk
The world's oldest active auction house is in Sweden. The
Auktionsverk was established in February 1674, though at first its catalogue
consisted of fine livestock and grains. It was much later that it turned to art
as its raison d'etre.
The Auction House was owned by the state and certainly had royal connections, having sold guns for
King Karl XII. The Realm Estates auctioned the King's trophy cannon
collection though Auktionsverk.
In 1993 the City of Stockholm sold to the auction house and it is now
privately owned.
