Editor's Note
We are pleased to make our first visit to Spain in this edition of
IATWM. Where else does one start to explore the beautiful art collection
of Madrid but at the Prado.
Diego Velázquez and his masterpieces are an integral part of this
incredible collection that features Les Meninas that some regard
as the greatest painting ever produced.
IATWM's regular readers may be scratching their heads remembering our
May 2004 edition which granted the title of greatest painting ever to
Rembrandt's The Night Watch.
The one constant among art fans and art critics is their willingness
to disagree about so much in this massive field of study. Is Velázquez
better than Rembrandt and what about Michelangelo, Monet, Copley or
Picasso? Who among these and many others deserves the title
"world's greatest painter" or one of their works "world's
greatest painting".
This is not a time-based sport where a fraction of a second can
determine the Gold Medal recipient or goals as a critical factor in
naming FIFA World Cup Champions. Art is
far too subjective to ever be so easily defined.
We can merely agree to
disagree and enjoy the art.
