It was only through the Écoles of Beaux-Artes that an artist was able to enter the Salon, the official French art exhibition that dated from 1667. Bridgman found success at the Salon in 1870 with his work A Provincial Circus. Bridgman is known for his works in the American Orientalist style.

Francis Stephen, Duke of Lorraine, (1708-1765) is the subject of a portrait in the style of Jean Etienne Liotard. Francis was the son-in-law of Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI after his marriage to Maria-Thérèse.

His wife made him co-regent with her and he became Francis I upon his election as Holy Roman Emperor. Together they had sixteen children, including a future Queen of France, the ill-fated Marie Antoinette.

Jean-Étienne Liotard, famous for his eccentric manner of dress, was a noted Swiss portraitist of the 18th Century. The Geneva native achieved notoriety for his alteration of his appearance shortly after his marriage likely at his wife's behest.

It is believed that his use of oriental dress and full long beard was a form of highly successful self-promotion. Maria-Thérèse commissioned the artist to paint a work of her sixteen children.
