International Art Treasures Web Magazine October 2003

Why can't contemporary artists receive attention? Why is it so hard for artists to receive recognition and support and yet they bring so much investment and tourism to their home towns? These two questions are recurring themes that we have heard at International Art Treasures as we travel the world to celebrate art and artists. This edition focuses on two world-class cities that are listening to their artists and craftspeople and have or will develop plans to address this common issue.

Auckland, New Zealand will celebrate Auckland'03 (AK'03) her first arts festival in over thirty years with more than 1,000 performances and with the support of corporations, governments, and the artists.

Toronto, Canada is in the middle of an election campaign for a new mayor, given the incumbent mayor's planned retirement. The five leading candidates will debate arts in their city at a special debate to be held during Toronto's upcoming ArtsWeek.

Moving on, we then look at some of the world's top art exhibitions. The Netherlands will host two spectacular exhibitions Hans Holbein and Papal Splendor: Treasures of the Vatican.

The Norman Rockwell Museum has the famous Four Freedoms on display. The museum houses an incredible collection of the painter's works, letters as well as an extensive art collection celebrating the grand master of Americana. The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, currently, is the last US stop of Eternal Egypt: Masterworks of Ancient Art from the British Museum before the exhibition moves to three Canadian locations.

We are pleased to feature Christie's in our regular Auction Action column and their October sale of Italian Flair: 20th Century Italian Art.

In our September edition Gourmet Gallery column we featured a restaurant that has a contemporary art gallery. This month's Gourmet Gallery column examines the Fairmont Royal York's Epic Restaurant and its permanent art collection.

These are just a few of the articles contained within the October edition of International Art Treasures. Continue along the journey with us for those who appreciate the best.
