Terra Museum of American Art
Studied Abroad: Painted Impressions from the Collection
September 6 through January 11, 2004

This focused exhibition examines work by American artists who sought to capture the temporal elements of their environment abroad, from the atmosphere of the landscape to the dynamism of the population. The approximately 20 paintings, most of which are small oils on panel, demonstrate the propensity of American artists such as Robert Henri and Maurice Prendergast to seek the modern in both subject and treatment.

The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia will accept nominations for the Sobey Art Award 2004 beginning July 14, 2003. Nominators must meet criteria determined by the Sobey Art Foundation, and nominated artists must also meet criteria as laid out in the award guidelines. The curatorial advisers are charged with developing a regional list based on the nominated artists and their professional knowledge of their regions and of the national arts scene. The regional short lists will be announced in November of 2003. For guideline information and electronic nomination forms please visit www.sobeyartaward.ca or contact the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia at (902) 424-5169 .

The deadline for nominations is October 1, 2003.

"The Sobey Art Award is the most important award in Canada for young artists." said AGNS Director Jeffrey Spalding, "With the changes to the nomination procedure; even more young artists will have the opportunity to have their work considered for this honor."

In 2002, the Sobey Art Foundation created the pre-eminent art award for young Canadian artists. The Sobey Art Award is a biennial award given to an artist under 40 who has had a show in a public or commercial art gallery 18 months prior to the award. A panel of curatorial advisers, one from a major gallery in each of five regions will decide the winner. The regions are: the Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, the Prairies and the North, and finally, the West Coast. Each adviser is charged with creating a shortlist of five artists from their respective regions.

The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia will host the 2004 Sobey Art Award. The exhibition, featuring works by the five artists selected for the Sobey Art Award national short-list, will open on September 17, 2004 at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.
